Tetlas For Sale at H&C

Many people have asked if they can just buy tetlas instead of trading for them. The Tetla Tsetsuwatil does not sell tetlas for money. But now there is a store that does. H&C, Hemp & Company clothing store, is now selling tetlas for money. Their store is located at 1312 Government Street in downtown Victoria.

Meaghie on TV Again Talking About Tetla

Meaghie Champion, founder of the Tetla Tsetsuwatil, was interviewed on the Jack Etkin show on June 23, 2015 about tetlas. This is the third time she has been on his show.

In the interview, Jack asks he can buy tetlas. Shortly after this interview was recorded, the Hemp & Company clothing store started selling tetlas so you can buy them there now.

Cabin 12 Out of Business, Hemp & Company Cuts Back to 50%

It's not always good news in the tetla economy. In June, Cabin 12 restaurant went out of business. That was one of three restaurants that was accepting payment 100% in tetlas and one of only four or five restaurants in the tetla economy.*

Hemp & Company clothing store recently increased their tetla percentage. Instead of allowing people to pay only 20% of the cost of clothing in tetlas, they upped it to 100% so people could and did buy clothing with no money at all, just tetlas. The reason they did this was because the owners wanted to use the tetlas at restaurants. With one of the main restaurants gone, they cut back to 50%. Hemp & Company owner Bill Finley said this would be temporary if more restaurants in the downtown area start accepting tetlas. At least he didn't cut back to 20%.

The tetla organization has contacted the owners of other restaurants and the owners of two other restaurants are saying they will probably join the tetla economy soon. There's no guarantee that will really happen, so efforts are being made to contact other restaurants and other businesses.




*(It's not clear if Sabri and Naanwich should be counted as two restaurants or one since they have consolidated to one location.)

Clothing Store Accepting Tetlas 100 Percent

A few days after Turmeric began accepting tetlas 100%, Hemp and Company clothing store downtown increased their percentage from 20% to 100%. So you can now buy clothing there and pay no money at all, only tetlas. Hemp and Company had previously received no tetlas, but after increasing the percentage, new customers started coming in and making purchases with tetlas.

Several other businesses are in discussions with the tetla organization regarding details about joining the tetla economy.  Details about all these businesses and others can be found at tetla.org under the "Where can you spend tetlas" tab.

East Indian Restaurant Accepting Tetlas 100 Percent

A restaurant in Langford called Turmeric Indian Cuisine joined the tetla economy in March, accepting payment 100% in tetlas (except for alcohol and catering). Their food is fantastic, especially the butter chicken which you can try at the lunch buffet along with a lot of other things. The owners of Turmeric have a handy way to deal with how to ring up tetla purchases on the till. Instead of hitting the gift certificate button like some other businesses, they have a "tetla button" that they set up to help keep track of tetla revenues as a separate category.

Turmeric Indian Cuisine is the fifth restaurant in the tetla economy and the third Indian restaurant, but one of only two which accept tetlas 100% from the general public. The other one is Cabin 12 Restaurant.

 

Cabin12 Restaurant Accepting Tetlas

The Cabin 12 restaurant is now accepting 100% payment in tetlas. At our request, that does not include beer or any alcoholic beverage.

Cabin 12 restaurant is located at 3111 Cedar Hill Road and is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 7 days a week. Good place for breakfast or lunch (they're not open at dinner time.) They provide free wifi internet access.

The people running Cabin 12 seem to be interested in much more than running a restaurant. They talk a lot about community and, by participating in the tetla economy, they are showing that they are serious about that.

They also accept payment in bitcoin or Canadian tire money plus Visa, Mastercard and of course regular Canadian money.

David Suzuki Endorses Tetla

David Suzuki, famous for his TV and radio series and books about nature and the environment, has endorsed the Tetla. He is best known as host of the popular and long-running CBC Television science magazine, The Nature of Things, seen in over forty nations. I listened to your interview on Rabble. Good for you. I am blown away by Tetla. I believe this kind of initiative is at the cutting edge of where we all have to go, that is keeping our currency local, stressing the importance of culture, fighting the trend to homogenization. Congratulations and thank you.

Globalization has been a disaster because it has meant going to the lowest standard of worker care (that's what we saw in Bangladesh recently) and environmental concern (remember Union Carbide and Bhopal). Globalization has also been accompanied by monoculture, the spread of KFC, MacDonalds, Sony, Apple, Nike, etc. as the icons young people aspire to. It results in envy, self hatred, suicide, move to cities, etc. We should treasure diversity, it is the key to resilience as we encounter increasingly uncertain futures. The unit of survival in the future will be local communities and the more self sufficient and grounded they are, the stronger they will be. That's why I am very excited to learn about Tetla. I believe you are moving in the direction the rest of society has to follow.
